DERBY HERITAGE WALK 2

VIII.   Continue to maintain the same direction through the Eagle Centre before turning left opposite the Playhouse Theatre, to walk through the indoor market – that replaces the former outdoor market whict once stood on the Morledge. Once outside, turn left and then right leading down to Albert Street.

20. THE PLAYHOUSE THEATRE

The Playhouse began operations in temporary quarters shortly after the Second World War, before moving to Sacheverel Street in 1952. They remained here until 1975, when they moved to a purpose built theatre in the Eagle Centre, establishing it as one of Britain’s foremost professional subsidised regional theatres. Closed 2008 due to financial problems - set to reopen later in year.

21. EAST STREET

Formerly known as Bag Street, it was renamed in 1883 and is at least 800 years old.

22. THE DERBY RAM STATUE

An eight-foot high statue in Derbyshire gritstone, erected at the corner of Albion Street and East Street in 1995 following the completion of pedestrianisation in the city centre. The Ram has long standing military connections dating back to 1838, when the 95th Derbyshire Regiment of Foot acquired their first ram mascot in India. Another important link is the nickname for Derby County Football Club, who are known as ‘The Rams’.

23. CORN EXCHANGE

Built in 1862, it has had a variety of uses and in 1897 became the Palace Theatre of Varieties before being taken over by the Derby Evening Telegraph in 1929.

24. OSNABRUCK SQUARE

Named after Derby’s twin city in Germany, a stone pillar in the centre of the square announces that the German city is 500 miles away. The fish market that once stood in the square was demolished in 1981, and re-sited in the Lockup Yard off the Cornmarket.
