FARMERS' MARKETS 2008

THE FEATURE

The distance that food has travelled and its freshness are questions the public are becoming more and more concerned about. Farmers' Markets only sell products which have been produced, grown, raised, baked or caught locally are sold on the markets.

Apart from where there is no business supplying a particular product, the produce sold normally comes from within a 30 mile radius of the market. All the stallholders must comply with stringent food and hygiene rules.

Buying at local Farmers' Markets helps to support the rural economy in the Derbyshire and the Peak District, which is so vital in preserving the beauty of the countryside. Following the introduction of various local food initiatives, it is now easier than ever to get the real flavour of Derbyshire and the Peak National Park.

NEWS

According to research from farms, households spent 1.5 million pounds last year in Britain's 4,000 farm shops and another 120 million pounds in farmers' markets. Around a third of people have used a farmers' market or food shop in the last 12 months. Demand is so high in many areas of the country, that it is now out pacing supply.

Food from Supermarkets has often been shipped around the world, either in chilled storage units or sealed in inert gas to slow down the rotting process, before it reaches the dinner table. Meat on the other hand is often not let hang long enough by Supermarkets, and as a consequence is packaged and sold too fresh.

More and more British housewives are now demanding food that they know to be fresh to feed their families. The result has seen a massive growth in the sale of fresh local farm produce direct to the consumer.

A TASTE OF THE PEAK
